May 2012 Childrens bed linen sets are something most parents will find themselves buying over and over again.
As your child grows then their tastes change and develop. Many children are showing their own style at the age of two! I know toddlers who will turn up their tiny noses at well chosen childrens bed linen sets just because they don’t have the right character on them!
Whether your children are toddlers or teens then you will have found yourself deliberating more than once over the various children’s bed linen sets available on the market today. Do you go with a modern set or perhaps something more traditional? Should you choose flannelette or cotton childrens bed linen sets? Silk or wool? The choices are endless and your children will be sure to have an opinion on what you decide on!

One thing we can be grateful for is the fact that we don’t have to make all our childrens bed linen sets by hand! It’s not so long ago that it was quite usual and normal to spend entire evenings darning sheets which in all probability you had stitched yourself.
Many vintage and antique examples of childrens bed linen sets are still in existence today, some are cherished family heirlooms and others are still in use!
Finely embroidered and appliquéd these were true examples of the kind of skill and patience which our Grandmothers had in those long ago days before the advent of TV and internet.
Tiny pillowcases and matching coverlets hand pieced in satin were quilted or embroidered with flowers or animals and were meant for babies and toddlers. Of course these day’s we do not give babies pillows for safety reasons, but not so long ago no babies cradle would have been complete without one.
Once children got older, then it was time to piece a patchwork quilt for their bed. Often these were made of recycled clothing and older bed linens. Whole families, including Dad would sit together on long winter evenings piecing the quilt by hand, a far cry from todays modern childrens bed linen sets.
Some were simply squares of fabric sewn together in a basic grid pattern, whilst others were worked into intricate hexagonal patterns. Appliqué was another popular form of decorating childrens bed linen sets and surviving examples give us an insight into family life as it once was.
Each member of a family would appliqué a square, sewing on figures, animals, floral patterns or lettering. The tiniest members of the family were expected to keep needles threaded until they were old enough to wield one themselves!
So the next time you’re deliberating over which duvet set to buy, consider the pains the parents of the past went through to ensure their child a warm nights sleep!
