Jan 2012 The urge to make our children’s rooms as attractive as possible is not a new trend. For many centuries people have enjoyed choosing and making children’s bedlinen with care and love.
To know that our children are sleeping soundly in good quality fabrics affords peace of mind. Whether this has always been the case is questionable though when we consider the trends of certain past era’s; I’m not sure what parents during the 1970s for instance were thinking… when nylon was the fabric of choice for most nursey bed linen!
Fortunately for us, today’s fashion is geared towards natural fabrics such as cotton and silk for nursey bed linen which make sweet dreams a reality for both children and parent alike!
In the night garden bedspread
The available sets of children’s bedlinens on the market today is breathtaking, there is something to suit all tastes. For younger boys, bright cotton duvet covers in fun nautical prints incorporating sailing boats, anchors and lighthouses in attractive red, blue and white will appeal to both parents and children alike.
For older boys, there are many popular character prints and more neutral stripes or checks. A tip to dressing a bed is to remember that if your duvet cover is busily patterned then plain contrasting sheets will look really eye catching; you can reverse this rule of thumb and have a plain block coloured duvet cover and fun patterned sheets.
Of course this rule applies to little girls also…and pretty doesn’t have to mean pink! Lilac and white makes for a beautiful and feminine colour choice for nursey bed linen as does lemon and white.
Why not consider customizing a plain duvet set yourself? For older girls, a plain cover can be easily embellished with the addition of satin ribbon bows stitched along one edge; another idea is to randomly stitch sequins across the top of a duvet cover and this looks especially pretty against a plain background. Remember though that small embellishments are not suitable for children under three as they do pose a choking hazard.
In the winter it can sometimes be necessary to add a separate layer aside from the usual duvet cover and it is then that a thin eiderdown can be a really welcome addition to your collection of children’s bedlinen.
These are readily available in most large stores and also online. There are some stunning handmade eiderdowns aimed at children around on the market today and these are really heirloom pieces, made to use and to cherish for years to come.
If you’re not quite sure what you are looking for, then remember that what you find attractive is the best thing to buy. Fashion comes and goes and children are notorious for their faddy tastes, so if you are not keen on replacing your children’s bedlinen on a regular basis then consider buying the best you can afford in neutral designs. Plain covers can easily be dressed up with fun cushions and your children will never know the difference! It is far better to play safe if your budget is small and to have a really stylish bed set that is easily transformed when the need arises!
